A magnitude-6.9 earthquake shook the northeastern coast of Japan on March 14, 2012.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was recorded at exactly 6:08 PM local time. The epicenter was traced 235 km (146 miles) south of Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan.
Tsunami alert has been issued urging people to evacuate. The public has been warned of a wave as high as 50 centimeters (20 inches).
